THE UNION SHOPPING NOTEBOOK · OCTOBER 12, 2026

Before you buy:
check the union connection.

A practical guide from Stuart Ingalls and Union People Connection. Start with one purchase and leave another shopper a source they can check.

We take pride in the hands that build this country. But a familiar brand, an American flag on a package, or a company’s long history cannot tell us who made every item on the shelf. Products can come from different plants. Services can use different operators. A useful union directory should help you check the specific connection.

1. Write down the exact item

For boots, capture the model number and the country-of-origin label. For food, note the product and any plant code. For tools, keep the model and manufacturer’s product page. “This brand is union” is a starting question, not a complete answer.

2. Find a source you can follow

Start with a union’s own buying guide, an official local’s page, or a manufacturer’s current factory information. The AFL-CIO publishes union-made-in-America shopping guides across holiday, food, travel and vehicle categories. Check the source date and the exact item covered.

3. Keep three questions separate

Record each answer separately. That makes the information more useful to the next person.

4. For travel, identify the worker group

Airline pilots, flight attendants, mechanics and ground workers can have different representation. Our transportation page points to official union directories and labels the workforce covered. For taxis and app-dispatched rides, a worker organization is a resource for drivers; its existence does not establish that every fleet or platform has a union contract.

5. Ask one clear question

Try: “Can you confirm which factory makes model ___, and whether the workers producing it are represented by a union?” For a service, ask about the specific operator and location. If you cannot confirm the answer, keep it marked as a lead.

6. Share enough detail to check

A useful recommendation includes the brand, exact product or service, factory or location, union or local, official source link, and date checked. If information changes, share the correction too. We would rather improve a listing than leave an unsupported claim in place.
